Hi I am Hugo Decker, a lawyer, legal theorist and author. I obtained a Bachelor of Laws (LL.B) from the University of Hasselt and a Master of Laws (LL.M) from the Catholic University of Leuven.
While studying, I developed an interest in the natural law theory. However, I found that many contemporary natural law theorists – while not short of original ideas or profound insights – rather often employed ‘self-evident’ principles. I, however, started to explore another, a more ‘classical’ approach — one wherein natural law receives a genuinely ‘natural’ interpretation, such as, for instance, with Ulpian. Consequentially, my research is at the crossroads between law, morality and (evolutionary) biology.
I examine these topics at the warm and welcoming University of Maastricht (Foundations of Law).
Furthermore, I am a lawyer at the award-winning Brussels-based firm Vanbelle Law. Together with my colleagues, I tackle challenging legal cases daily and aim for the best results.
